Quidditch is a sport that has been played over hundreds of years - mostly in Europe. It
never managed to catch on in America, but Canada plays. Asia isn't bothered by
Quidditch.
Quidditch is played on brooms with fourteen players - seven on each team.
Three per team try to
get the Quaffle into one of three large hoops. One on each team blocks the hoops. Another
two try to keep Bludgers (balls that fly around trying to knock you off your broom) away
from their team and can direct them towards the other team. One player attempts to catch
the Golden Snitch, a tiny golden ball that zooms around the pitch which is almost
impossible to see.
Scoring
- 10 points for a goal
- 150 points if the Snitch is caught
The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.
The Players
There are seven players on each team. The players are this exactly:
- 3 Chasers - These players are trying to score goals with the Quaffle
on the other team's hoops. 10 points per goal scored.
- 2 Beaters - These players have bats and try to keep Bludgers away from their
team members. They can direct Bludgers towards the other teams.
- 1 Keeper - This player's job is to block their team's hoops.
- 1 Seeker - This player is supposed to find and catch the Golden Snitch. Doing
so
awards 150 points and ends the game, so the team who catches it almost always wins.
The Balls
The magical sport of Quidditch includes four balls. These include the following:
- 1 Quaffle - The Quaffle is the ball that is thrown around and scored by the
Chasers. 10 points are awarded per goal.
- 2 Bludgers - Bludgers have the job of trying to hurt whoever they please, and
that is anybody. They are hit by Beaters and can be made to change direction by doing
so
- 1 Snitch - The Golden Snitch is the most important ball of the game. It's small
and almost impossible to see, and flies around at a tremendous speed. It's the Seeker's
job to catch this, and doing that signifies the end of the game and 150 points to the team
who caught it.
Equipment
Like all sports, Quidditch requires things to use.
- 4 Balls - See "The Balls" above.
- 6 Goal Posts - There are 3 goal posts on each side. These are fifty-foot-high
and are the main way of scoring.
- Broomsticks - Obviously, as Quidditch is played on Brooms, there is a need for
them. Each player gets one broom.
- 4 Beaters' Bats - Each Beater gets a bat to knock around the Bludgers.
At Hogwarts
At Hogwarts, a Quidditch tournament is played each year. Each team plays every other
team once - three matches per team, six matches total.
